The household dust mite is not anybody’s first choice of a bed mate but there might be 2 million of them hiding in your mattress ready to snuggle up when your fast asleep. Its a common misconception that the irritation that dust mites cause is due to their bite but in actual fact it’s their waste that people are allergic to.

Recently the news had been full of stories about the current ‘Dust Mite Epidemic‘ in Britain. Take Gabrielle Crabb and his story on how he copes with his allergy and comments from the NHS about dust mite allergies as just two examples. Allergy UK estimates that a massive 12 million people in the UK are now allergic to their own homes with the majority of these allergies caused by the tiny dust mite.

This figure has not been helped by the fact that in modern homes dust mites have thrived, especially those incubated by central heating with little ventilation. Usually dust mites can be found hiding in the bedroom, where a single mattress may contain more than two million dust mites!

The situation has become so severe that doctors revealed plans last month to expose babies to dust mites in an attempt to halt the rising issue. Experts hope that exposing babies to the common bug will strengthen the defenses of the next generation.

Get to know the Dust Mites Living With You

The house dust mite is nearly impossible to see without magnification meaning that nearly 100,000 of them can live in a single square yard of carpet! They primarily feed on dead skin shed by humans and other animals but they can also absorb moisture from the air. A single dust mite produces about 20 waste droppings each day, each containing a protein to which many people are allergic. Disgusting!

Allergic to Your Own Home?

Open every Bank Holiday to visitors. Gates open at 11:00am.

It’s a great couple of hours out for all the family, whatever age.  Ride the miniature trains, they have two circuits, including a tunnel for the adventurous.  Kids from 5 to 105 can enjoy the ride and feel the wind in their hair.

Refreshments are available and they have seating to sit and watch the trains go by whilst enjoying your picnic.

Located just off Jnc. 2 of the M180 they’re just 30 minutes from Doncaster and it’s well worth the run out, whatever the weather.  They’re just down the road from the Sandtoft Transport Museum so why not make it a full day out and visit both.  They have ample free parking on site.

If you’ve been unlucky enough to get lily pollen on your carpet be very careful not to press it into the carpet fibres.  Also, don’t let the pollen get wet!

Grab a roll of sticky tape and gently place it over the pollen.  The pollen will stick to the tape.  Using a new piece of tape every time, continue with this until all the pollen is removed.

You can prevent it happening again by snipping out the stamens of the lily before it comes into full bloom.  Catch them on a plate or similar and dispose of them, better safe than sorry.

If the above procedure hasn’t completely removed the pollen we may be able to help.  We have a specialist product for Lily pollen, but it’s not 100% guaranteed to work.  If you’ve not got all the pollen all out we’d recommend you contact your contents insurer and see if you have Accidental Damage cover.  If you do they may pay for us to come and attempt the specialist removal.  If we can’t remove it we’ll supply a letter to your insurer confirming that for you.

Oh Oh! I’ve got Lily Pollen on my lovely carpet!

First Order on New Online Cleaning Products Shop

That depends on a number of factors.  Things such as carpet construction, how much soot there is and has it penetrated into the carpet backing all play a part.

The No. 1 rule is DO NOT WET, OR BRUSH the soot
until you’ve followed these steps…

1. Use the nozzel on your vacuum cleaner to remove the thickest of the soot.  If you can avoid touching the soot, or the carpet, just use the vacuum hovered above it.
2. Apply Baking Soda powder to the area to completely cover the affect area. Gently brush this into the carpet, don’t scrub, and leave for 30-40 minutes.  This will absorb the soot.
3. Vacuum the carpet again, using just the nozzel as before.  This should remove the thickest of the soot.
4. Apply Baking Soda for a second time, brush it in and leave again for 30-40 minutes.
5. Thoroughly vacuum the carpet, preferably with an upright vacuum with brushes.
6. If the mark still remains try using a dry cleaning solvent by applying the solvent to a towel and blotting the carpet.  Change the towel frequently and NEVER apply the solvent directly to the carpet.
7. Once the worst of the stain is out you can use “Soda Water” by gently pouring onto the area and blotting out with a thick towel.  It’s best to fold the towel quite thick, place it over the stain and then stand on the towel.  The pressure will cause the fizzyness to release the stain.  Alternatively use something like our World Famous Spot Remover PF, which uses the same fizzing action to clean, with added ingredients to help.  You can even get a 5oz Sample can for Free.
